All about foam party coverage!

Libby Ulm

They're colorful, high-energy, and a whole lot of fun...what are they? Foam parties!

Foam parties have become increasingly popular at events all across the United States. However, like any interactive business, they also come with unique risks. That's why having the right insurance matters. Let's dive in!

How does SIA's foam party coverage work?

If you host foam parties, each foam cannon operator can obtain liability coverage through SIA's Group 3 Performer Policy. The Performer Policy covers claims such as injury to an attendee, property damage, and/or offending someone as a result of your foam party. Performer policies are written on an individual basis, meaning only one person is covered. If you have multiple foam cannon operators, each will need their own policy. This policy does not cover the business; however, you are able to list a DBA, which is printed on your proof of insurance. For example, your policy could read: Jane Smith DBA Jane Smith of Smith Family Foam Parties.

What about assistants?

Assistants can be added to your policy with an additional premium, but they cannot be another foam cannon operator. Assistants are not named on the policy, so the person helping you can change from gig to gig! They can help with things like setup, teardown, crowd management, general event support, and more. The key to this coverage: Low-risk personnel who would not stop the show from going on if they were not there.

Foam party safety tips

Creating a fun environment also means creating a safe one. Here are a few best practices we recommend for hosting foam parties!

  • Carry proper insurance.
    • Having insurance means you will be protected in case of a claim arising. It can also set you apart as a dedicated individual in your field, while also creating an ease of hire. Reminder: Each foam cannon operator must carry their own coverage.
  • Offer additional insured certificates.
  • Use participant waivers.
    • By having participants sign waivers, you may be able to deter individuals from suing you unnecessarily.
  • Post slippery surfaces warnings.
    • Giving caution to potentially slippery surfaces can help attendees stay safe while having fun.
  • Inform clients about potential risks with color additives.
    • If/when using colored foam additives, let clients know there could be a risk of staining. Offering to test the product in an inconspicuous area first is often a good idea. Alternatively, especially for evening events, consider using lights to create a colored foam effect that doesn't risk staining!

In closing

Foam parties are all about creating memorable experiences, but preparation and safety are just as important as the fun itself. Having the right coverage, understanding how your policy works, and following good safety practices lets SIA protect you from claims while you get to focus on entertaining clients.
